Interested in having me as your thesis advisor?

Fill out the form

Please fill out the form above to set up a meeting with me if you are interested in working with me as your thesis advisor. I am likely to consider your application positively if you would like to explore (1) statistical properties of multivariate time series analysis methods using the functional dependence framework (see Wu, 2005 ), (2) asymptotic properties of conformal prediction (see Chapter 5 of Angelopoulos et al., 2024 ), or both. I also have several ideas for master’s-level projects that are more about applying conformal prediction to solve particular problems.

Eligibility

This meeting should take place before the quarter-point of your graduate study. (If you are a master’s student, this means I need to have knowledge of your interest before the end of your first quarter.) The reason for this deadline is that we will need a significant amount of time (three to six months) establishing a shared knowledge base and identifying a suitable thesis project that is within your capabilities. Exceptions will be made only when a student arrives with a sufficiently well-developed thesis idea that happens to overlap with my current research interests.

Qualifications

  1. You are expected to be comfortable with, or at least open to, coding in both R and Python. A great deal of your time will be spent implementing existing methods from scratch or modifying them.
  2. You should not be turned off by the prospect of having to learn to reproduce and adapt the proofs of the key results and the proof techniques that frequently appear in your narrow research area.
  3. You are expected to be comfortable with, or at least open to, using English as the primary language for technical communication, both written and oral.

Let me be clear that I am not looking for a candidate with complete fluency in any of these three broad categories of skills. The idea is rather that you will improve in these areas as a result of working with me. I do, however, expect you to look forward to these challenges. It is perfectly fine not to want to take on these challenges during your graduate career—but if that is the case, choosing me as your advisor is unlikely to lead to a positive experience for either of us.

Notes

  1. We will meet most weeks for about 45 minutes. Occasionally, we may choose to skip some weeks.
    • You are expected to send an email specifying the meeting agenda by 10 p.m. the day before each meeting.
    • You are expected to send a brief summary, including what we have agreed you should work on, by 10 p.m. the day after each meeting.
    • I am out of town during the breaks. Meetings will continue over Zoom. In the rare cases where my physical presence is required (e.g., you need my signature), you may be asked to travel to my location outside of Seoul.
  2. Some financial support is available from 이공계 연구생활장려금 until August 2027.
