I am a statistician who thinks a lot about doing statistical inference without a whole lot of assumptions. Sometimes, this is about locating the right quantity to pin the assumptions on (Kim et al., 2021; Hellstern et al., 2025; Hellstern et al., 2026). At other times, this is about taking advantage of a structural symmetry that may not be visible to the naked eye (Kim et al., 2020). At the same time, this can also lead to questions about whether we have let go of too many assumptions (Kim & Barber, 2023).
I am actively looking for collaborators. In particular, I would be very interested to hear from researchers in adjacent fields who regularly see data exhibiting nontrivial dependence among observations (e.g., time series, spatial, or network-structured data) or with distribution shift, who have had success with initial forays into deep learning techniques, but would like some error bars to go with it. It is quite possible my expertise can increase the quality of your research.
I would also be excited to talk to researchers in educational psychology or related fields who design and run randomized trials on teaching methods. I love coming up with and testing out new teaching techniques and have spent the past few years doing just that in my classrooms. However, I would love to know whether my ideas actually work, and as a statistician and someone who teaches an experimental design course at that, I am all too aware that the data I am able to gather are well short of the gold standard of a proper RCT. Therefore, I would love to work with someone who can help turn these ideas into testable hypotheses, and then help design and analyze the resulting trials.
Some of the key words that describe my past and current research projects are:
- Foundational concepts: algorithmic stability, asymptotic theory, Gaussian approximation (e.g., Berry-Esseen, Chernozhukov-Chetverikov-Kato), dependence measures (e.g., strong mixing, functional dependence)
- Methods: bootstrap, conformal prediction, graphical models, post-regularization inference, resampling & sample splitting, spectral density
- Application domains: MRI data, neuroimaging data, time-series data
TMI: Just because your research interest does not appear on the list does not mean that I will not be interested in your problem; the only reason it is not there may be that I have had no opportunity to encounter it. After all, isn’t the best part of collaboration being introduced to problems that you would otherwise not have the chance to think about?
(Kim & Barber, 2023).
- 기초 개념: algorithmic stability, asymptotic theory, Gaussian approximation (e.g., Berry-Esseen, Chernozhukov-Chetverikov-Kato), dependence measures (e.g., strong mixing, functional dependence)
- 방법론: bootstrap, conformal prediction, graphical models, post-regularization inference, resampling & sample splitting, spectral density
MRI data, neuroimaging data, time-series data
- 基礎概念:algorithmic stability, asymptotic theory, Gaussian approximation (e.g., Berry-Esseen, Chernozhukov-Chetverikov-Kato), dependence measures (e.g., strong mixing, functional dependence)
- 手法:bootstrap, conformal prediction, graphical models, post-regularization inference, resampling & sample splitting, spectral density
MRI data, neuroimaging data, time-series data
